URGENT APPEAL

URGENT APPEAL

The Orangutan Information Centre (OIC) urges Taman Hewan Siantar (THS) zoo to give back two orangutans that they just received to North Sumatran BBKSDA to be rehabilitated and eventually released back to the wild one day. Both of the orangutans were suspected to have been poached from Leuser Forest and given to THS zoo.

Both of the poached orangutans now are kept in the THS zoo

The North Sumatran BBKSDA and OIC HOCRU Team have tried to take the orangutans, however, THS refused to hand them back. This act is considered to be a violation of the Forestry Ministry Regulation of P.53/Memhut-IV/2007 about the orangutan conservation strategic planning 2007-2017 that stated all of the confiscated orangutans has to be put into the rehabilitation centre to be released back to the wild. “We refused that poached orangutans on the case like this to be kept into zoo such as THS. Any poached orangutan still has significant opportunity to be released back to the forest, where they belong. We push the government to be consistent into the conservation effort of this protected species” Panut, Founding Director of OIC said. Support us to push THS zoo to hand back the two orangutans for their second chance of life! Who’s with us?
